50061599_Geneva_Bible

1599 Geneva Bible.
This Edition of the Breeches or Geneva Bible predates the King James Version and is very collectable. A bible favored by the Puritans and frequently quoted by Shakespear. This version introduced many firsts for English Bible Translations.

It was the first :
  • translation based on the origional Greek and Hebrew
  • printed in a readable Roman Type Style
  • to number the verses
  • to include a concordance
  • to include extenive notes

  • Condition: Trimmed close at top (at bottom in Psalms section) upon second binding (circa 1805). With wear to corners, generally rounded throughout. Worst wear to first few and last few pages. The Title Page is missing. Four pages missing internally. These are pages 61/62, from Numbers, Ch 26 --; and pages 131/132 from Deuteronomy, Ch 20--. These are Not collectible pages and Not book headings. I have no idea why or when they were lost. Please consider condition and look closely at the pictures before purchasing. This bible has the faults noted which should be considered before purchase. The binding is tight and no pages are loose or weakened at binding stitches.
    About this Bible:

This Bible was missing the general title but including four other preliminaries: (1) "To the Christian Reader" (2) "Of the incomparable treasure of the holy Scriptures" (3) " How to profite in reading the holy Scriptures" (4) "The names and order of all the Bookes of the Olde and New Testament" AND was bound with two study helps: (1) "A briefe table of the interpretation of the proper names" (2) "A table of the principall things that are contained in the Bible" Colophon: “Imprinted at London by the Deputies of Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queenes most excellent Maiestie 1599” A Psalter with musical staffs was also included.

Provenance: Various family inscriptions appear in ink on blank pages between Old Testament and the title page of the New Testament. Some quite early and in a 17th-Century hand recording 2 Baptisms in 1641 and 1642 that is difficult to read. London and Sarah, daughter of John ---? Born 1642 are easier to read. Another full page of family inscriptions (dated 1677-1738) followed by a very neatly inked family genealogy page of the Joseph Dewsnap Family (1776-1820) and likely their family Bible, on blank verso of New Testament title page. An inscription at the end of Job by Joseph Dewsnap 1819: Post tenebras, spero lucem, nullus, reprehensor, formidandus est, amatori veritatis. (After the darkness, I hope for light, there is none, fear is to blame, lover of truth. Compare Job 17:12 They have turned night into day, and after darkness I hope for light again.) Disbound 2007.

1918 New Testament War Bible Here is a New Testament bible printed for the solders to carry with them into battle. It is translated out of the original Greek and with the former translations diligently compared and revised. The binding appears to be canvas. As you can see in the photo, the bible is about as tall as a cloths pin and half as wide. It is in good condition, no tears or writing on the pages. Some of the pages have been individually folded, perhaps to make the page, but overall it is in good shape.

Canvas Cover. Likely WW II (No date Printed By Thomas Nelson) "By his majesty's Command" likely refers to King James. Probably US not British because of Star Spangled Banner.

You are bidding on a New Testament hand bible that was given by His Majestys Special Command during WW I.

It is in amazingly excellent condition, no tears or loose pages and the binding is strong. On the inside cover lists 8 bible verses for the soldier and below that "A prayer for the Soldier"; "Keep me, O Heavenly Father, straight and pure and true. Protect my dear ones at home. Whatever comes, help me to do my duty in Christ's name. Amen".

The Star Spangled Banner is printed on the first page and on the inside of the back cover the Battle Hymn of the Republic is printed. This is a very treasured item, winning bidder will dearly love having this item.

    Good luck on your bidding!!!!!!

There are 4 books in this lot. The first one on the upper left is newer at the 1965 date. It is a Saint Meinrad Prayer book. It has several funeral cards in the interior dated from 1967 to just a few years ago. The book is in excellent condition. The next is a Catholic Family Daily Missal. This one is dated 1959. Next on the upper right is a Following The Mass dated 1931 printed in Germany. The last one is the best I believe. It is a Catholic's Prayer book dated 1932. This one has a metal cover that has been engraved God's Weapon. This one has the name Cpl. Benjamin Davito inside the cover along with a number. This 1940's New Testament is a Gideon Bible designed for our servicemen during World War II. Included in this 4 3/4" x 3" New Testament is our National Anthem, Well-Loved Hymns plus a letter to the Armed Forces by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt. The interesting thing about this New Testament is that it states it was given to a Mrs. Kohls from a Mrs. E.H. Snow and dated 8-25-42. It makes you wonder why this Armed Forces New Testament was signed and given by one lady to another lady! This Bible has been used and does show some wear, but for the right person would be a treasure! Please email if you have questions.

THE HEART SHIELD BIBLE Fits Snugly in Uniform Pocket. The Engraved Gold-Finished Steel Front Cover Protects His Heart. Here is an evocative piece of World War II history. This is the Heart Shield Bible - meant to keep a soldier's heart safe from enemy bullets during combat. The text of the book consists of the New Testament and was published in 1943. It is bound in worn black leather that shows separation (1/2 inch) at the top and bottom part of the binding. The book's cover is made of heavy steel plate that has a gold wash finish. It is engraved: May this keep you safe from harm The piece measures 4-7/8 in in length and is 3 in wide. The bible looks to have had actual use as exhibited by the wear to the leather and the scratches & loss to the gold washed cover. The majority of the gold on the edges of all the pages remains. While all pages are present one has come loose from the binding. There is a small hole on the title page only (see photos). It is marked on the back, inside cover with the name, Ruth Lancaster. A moving and very personal memento from the Second World War.

This is a bible that was issued to troops in world war 2. It indicates conformable to the edition of 1611 Commonly known as the authorized or King James Version. It states National Edition. It has a page that is printed by the White House , Dated Jan 25, 1941 - "To the Armed Forces". It is brown and shirt pocket size. About (approx) 2-3 inches wide, and about 5 inches high. It is plain brown - I didnt bother with a picture as theres nothing to really put in a photo - but if you need one please let me know. This particular one was issued to my grandfather. His name, information, and service numebr are on the first page. Hesigned in on Dec 7th, 1965 in the back. Im selling it as someone who would buy such a thing - wether a military collector, or religious colelctor - whould get more appreciation out of this item then I would. It is in very good condition in my opinon. I do not see any torn or ripped pages - but please note I just flipped through it looking for spot damage - did not find any, but i did not go through it page by page.

GENEVA' OR BREECHES BIBLE, PRINTED BY ROBERT BARKER, LONDON, 1607. IN GOTHIC BLACK LETTER WITH ROMAN TYPEFACE RUBRICS AND TITLE PAGES. (9 x 6.5 inches approx). I am quite new to dealing in Antiquarian books but will attempt to give an accurate description as to the condition. I have provided lots of photos which give a much better indication as the general state of repair. The contents include: Common PrayersOld Testament Apocrypha The New Testament Two right profitable and fruitfull Concordances The Whole Booke of Psalmes collected into English Meeter by Thomas Sternehold . There are woodcut initials and tailpieces throughout. It looks as if the bible has been rebound in Leather in the 19th Century and at this stage when it was trimmed some of the page notes have been truncated. The Title page and the first 10 pages of Genesis are missing as are 2 pages from Kings. 6 pages at the start of Psalmes of David are eaten away on the right hand side. The remaining Title pages to the various section are in place and are all dated 1607. The vast majority of the pages are in good clean readable condition. The spine has been refitted but the binding itself is tight and sound. The Common Prayers, Concordances and Psalmes have unnumbered pages so I am unable to verify their completeness, although I would say that they are substantially complete. There are some ink annotations from the 17th century with mentions to the Locke family. These annotations include an old recipe!!

A Roman letter, early KJV Bible in quarto size The Holy Bible. Cambridge: Thomas and John Buck, printers to the Univeristie, 1637. Quarto, calf with raised bands and 8 ribbon markers. Sometime rebacked with a shelf number in gold on the spine; the calf on the front cover is about 2/3 gone; the front board is splitting about half way down but sound. The rear board has an embossed stamp from the Hampstead Public Libraries and the remaining calf is rather cracked and worn or flaked off around the edges. All edges gilt (worn). There is a paste down inside the front cover and stamp on the back of the title page also from the library. The general title page is not present and has been replaced with the New Testament title, with the top section cut out and replaced with a hand written verse, "The night is far spent...." Romans 13.12. There are a couple of neat repairs to small tears, and there is a page with a small hole affecting a few letters, but otherwise it appears to be textually complete in modern type, sound and would look fine on a shelf. 9" x 6 1/2"

The prayer for King Charles I is present in the remaining portion of the Book of Common Prayer, along with prayers for his sister Mary and her husband Frederick the Elector, indicating a date between 1626 and 1649. 8 1/2 in x 6 in
